House Dust Mite

- The allergens and are delivered with allergic disease.

- The family Pyroglyphidae - ‘Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus’ (European dust mite), ‘Dermatophagoides

farinae’ (American dust mite) and ‘Euroglyphus maynei’.

- A favourite food is dander (both human and animal skin flakes)

- It nests in areas such as mattresses, sofas, carpets and blankets, etc.

- HDM survives in all climates, even at high altitude. HDM thrive in the indoor environment provided by homes,

specifically in bedrooms and kitchens. It survives well in mattresses, carpets, furniture and bedding. Even in

dry climates, house dust mites survive and reproduce easily in bedding (especially in pillows.

- HDM is a hunter that has no eyes, no respiratory system.

SM can be found living in and on poorly stored food and grains.

- It can be in kitchen floor dust, cupboards, and pantries.

- It causes allergy and occupational respiratory disease in those who handle grains such as farm workers.

For example, beds are a prime habitat (where 1/3 of life occurs). A typical used mattress may have anywhere from

100,000 to 10 million mites inside. (Ten percent of the weight of a two year old pillow can be composed of dead mites and their droppings.)

There are also other factors increasing number of allergic people continually. The reason of this aggravation is mainly

due to the increasing of atmospheric pollution as well; with the fact that the mites produce the dropping hanging in

the air and that we receive at each moment in our pulmonary alveolar.

Size

House Dust Mite is just visible against a dark background in normal light.

It measures 0.4 millimeters (0.016 in) in length and 0.25–0.32 millimeter (0.0098–0.013 in) in width. Male and female

adult house dust mites are creamy blue and have a rectangular shape.

The body of the house dust mite also contains a striated cuticle. House Dust Mites have eight legs (except 3 pairs in

the first instar).

Life cycle

The average life cycle for a male house dust mite is 10 to 19 days.

A mated female house dust mite can last up to 70 days, laying 60 to 100 eggs in the last 5 weeks of her life.

In a 10-week life span, a house dust mite will produce approximately 2,000 fecal particles and an even larger number

of partially digested enzyme-covered dust particles.

The causes of allergic illness are multiple:

- Asphyxia by lacking of natural ionization (sensation of freshness in full nature, while we often uncomfortable

with the lacking of oxygen caused by great heat in the commercial centers and the spaces reduced with

intense passageway).

- Overload of the atmospheric pollutions due to the vehicles and industries near our habitations. These

pollutions weaken our natural defenses and lower the combativeness of the immune system.
